Five years ago, the Colorado rugby scene vibrated in the midst of a June with much on offer: 10th Annual Rocky Mountain 15s All Star Challenge - the elite, U-19, tournament of national consequence - was on (2015 RMC is on at Aurora Sports Park, June 19-21) ; 43rd Annual Denver 7s - again, a contest with national side implications - 2015’s D7s takes place on June 27th@theHuge Complex of  Dick’s Sporting Goods Park; and 2010 Churchill Cup was providing the rugby faithful with a brimful of international sport brewed up at the Infinity Kettle in Glendale.

Canada Rugby, after topping both Uruguay and France to advance to Churchill Cup’s final against a Stuart Lancaster-coached England XV, made rugby magic one Thursday night; an element of that Canada test side arrived unannounced for a visit with Denver’s newly-chartered youth side, 303 RFC, on its training grounds at Lindsley Park. Among the Canadian cohort was: Glasgow Warrior DTH van der Merwe (who’ll play next Guinness Pro12 season with Ospreys; Canada’s then-team captain,  hooker Pat Riordan; Canada’s recent team captain, backrow Aaron Carpenter; second row Tyler Hotson; and flanker Nanyak Dala; And as great good fortune would have it, a passerby, Marcia Simmons, partner of the late Union legend Rick Carlson, lived nearby and ran home to retrieve her camera - thus a record was made of “The Night Team Canada made Training”, an event of seeming unimport, yet one that demonstrated the dedication and commitment of our neighbors in the True North to our game, and one that will abide as significant memory with all in attendance... one rugby night in June.
