USA Rugby Men’s Division 2 Championship: Detroit Tradesmen v Tempe Old Devils
Bright skies and mid-80s for the start of the D-2 cup match and the eastern champs, Detroit, would look to overpower Tempe with pack dominance providing possession and their fluid backline finishing movements, while the sturdy and steady opposition of an Old Devils XV reckoned to prove consummate on both ends of the pill during their rollicking title game ride. Tempe appeared as a XV full of blindside forwards, tenacious in defense and rapacious on the heavy front foot.
Tempe were down and into their opponent’s business district, ten meters from goal early, hammering hardy with powerful pick-and-goes from breakdown until tighthead Denton Pule bashed through a gap to touch down the opening try of the match in the ninth minute: 5-0 for Tempe.

The Devils would extend their lead after inside center Maceo Brown gathered a kick ahead just into Detroit territory, fended off a would-be stopper and scampereded into goal for the touchdown converted by scrumhalf Alex Taefu, and it was 12-nil after a dozen ticks.
Tempe upped their advantage to 19 in pulsing slamma-jamma phasework nearby goal that led to flanker Denton Darrow’s dot followed by Taefu’s additional deuce, and 19-0 for Tempe in the 22nd minute.
Taefu would ground his own on a magical countering maneuver for thirty-five meters after Tradesmen failed to clear their lines: 24-0 for Beelzebub’s Best Demons approaching the break.
Detroit were down and pressuring Tempe well within site of the Promised Land, but comprehensive defending by the Devils denied the score and it was 24-nil at Akroyd’s midpoint signal.
Old Devils were keen on the counterattack with their back-three-backs proving that they were up to the task of turning disadvantage to decided benefit with exciting return capabilities demonstrated, while Detroit suffered handling errors that hampered continuous forward play.
Brown would obtain his brace after a dazzling, 30-meter sprint to goal for the touch down that made it 29-0 in the 45th minute.
A sticksplitter by Taefu extended the Tempe lead to 32 in the 51st minute.
