Denver East High Angels rule Monarch

Rugby Colorado: Boys Premier High School

Denver East High Angels ran their record 2017 to 3-0-0 with road victory over previously unbeaten Monarch at Williams Field in Superior. Zero for the house after a bruising opening half with handling errors and a remarkably high penalty count causing discontinuity of play.

Angels flyhalf, Sam Adix, applied canny boot to ball in the second stanza and whether it was a wee looker over the defense, a long ranger deep into Monarch territory, or a hoist hung dizzy in the heavens, all found space or fumbling fingers in face of the onrushing Denver host and East were ahead 10-0 early in the last thirty. Impressive clashing ongoing the midfield as each XVs center pairing pounded the channels, but steadfast defense both ways, turnovers well-grappled and the odd knock-on reversed possession often. Swift, sure recycle by East halfback Theo Bennett ensured plenty of ball for the talented visiting backline to manipulate.

Monarch got onboard with a grounding by their #9 converted to goal and it was 10-7 midway through the last half.

East would regain its ten-point advantage near time on a try made seven, but a converted score by the home team backrow lock in extra time made for an exciting finish and the result to travelers at 17-14.

The Angels, on 14 table points right now, take on reigning Rugby Colorado champion Regis Jesuit Raiders (3-1-0 & 14 pts) - winners over Colorado Springs Grizzlies, 17-14, yesterday - on the upcoming Wednesday, 7 at Heaven on the Denver East campus, while Monarch travel to Fort Collins after spring break on Wednesday, April 5, in their next fixture.

Talk of the league now, however, is the 2017 promotee from Division-2, Terrors Rugby, out of Palmer High School in Colorado Springs.   2016’s D-2 champ, a scary-strong side, are 4-0-0 with all table points counted midway through their campaign, outscoring their opposition at a rate of nearly 10:1. The Springs juggernaut’s upcoming trio of matches will be telling: @Monarch, Saturday, 4.8; v East, 4.15; and @Regis on Friday, 4,21.
