Angels top Jesuit for State

Denver East High Angels claimed Colorado High School Rugby's greatest prize on Saturday, coming from behind to record 17-14 victory over longtime rival, Regis Jesuit Raiders and earn the Premiership Trophy at Don Breese Stadium on campus at Lewis-Palmer High School in Monument.
East saw their 12-7 halftime lead go begging as a weakside maneuver from the base of a won, five-meter Jesuit scrum resulted in a Raiders grounding well and truly converted from touch and a 14-12 Regis lead early in the second stanza.

The action remained within the 22s for an extended period until Denver breached the Jesuit defense and mounted a series of pounding pick-and-goes from breakdown into Regis' business district, ten meters from paint. Ball swung wide found the wing with the wherewithal to cross and touch down in the corner and East held the advantage, yet only by three at 17-14 with ten minutes left on referee Kurt Weaver's clock. Regis were hard at it, in between the ten meter lines and pressuring and sands fled the hourglass, but turnover obtained and pill cleared to touch followed by Weaver's final whistle meant a fifth State Championship for the high holy flyers.
