RMR Men's Division-3: Northern Colorado v Queen City

Northern Colorado center, D'Lomn McMullen, in space

Fort Collins Flamingos v Queen City Rams
written by: Bob Lyon
In a season-concluding match of significance, Rocky Mountain Rugby Men’s Division-3 numbers 1 and 2, Queen City Rams and Northern Colorado Flamingos, battled the full ’80 in Fort Collins. Rams had well-beaten NoCo at the Denver end of their home-away series and are en route the playoffs, while Northern were well-prepared to send their opponents on the road to the Missouri knockouts with questions rather than answers.
Flamingos got aboard early after securing the opening hoist by their guests, platform set and the swift sling along the three-quarters line had midfielder, D'Lomn McMullen, into space and across the paint to touch down the try converted by McMullen’s center partner, Brian Schroeder, and 7-nil for hosts in the very first minute of play.
Homeboys right back at it with fast work from a disintegrating ruck springing flyer, Matt Belasco, to cross and touch down for Schroeder’s plus-two and 14-0 for Northern Colorado within five minutes of the opening bell.
Queen City were able to cross-and-dot in the 17th minute: 14-5 yet for the home team.
Solid passing and sure support saw McMullen away and into goal for his brace: 19-5 at ’34.
Rams replied with 19 unanswered for their first lead of the afternoon at 24-19.
With sands running fleet the hourglass, Flamingos worked the pill in a multi-phase movement, maintaining possession and forward momentum until they were able to break the Rams defensive alignment and score beneath the post to draw level at 24-all. However, the conversion went awry and the record remained at a somewhat unfulfilling 24 points, one might think, for everyone in the Northern Tier.
