·         Japan went behind the Bear for a minute, 0-7, but slow and steady on the  return for the 5-pointer, winning out, 30-10, at the last blast past Russia;

·         Australia opened its RWC account with a strong second stanza showing to return from two-point, halftime deficit, 12-14, for the 39-21, 5-table points result over Fiji;

·         France ran out to a 17-point advantage by half, before losing the second stanza big and nearly the match, though Les Bleus managed to hold out Pumas at the death for 23-21, 4-table points, victory topping Argentina;

·         New Zealand savored a sublime starting joy at the festival with  All Blacks 23-13 sorting of South Africa;

In the opening quartet of Tests, EVERY XV that went ahead at first, came in last at the end of the day, ponder-ponder...
